Argentina

The agency for standardization in Argentina is the "Instituto Argentino de Normalizaci�n y Certificaci�n"

Until 1996 known as: – IRAM (abbreviation) "Instituto Argentino de Racionalizaci�n de Materiales"

Plug Type I — (oplique flat pin blades, with grounding)

This type of configuration is also used in the countries American Samoa, American Uruguay, Argentina, Australia, China, Cook Islands, East Timor, El Salvador, Fiji, Guatemala, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, St. Vincent (Winward Is), Tajikistan, Tonga, Uzbekistan, Western Samoa.

Argentina IRAM standards:

IRAM 2063 (Equipment Class II) — Plug 2 pole 2 wire non grounded

IRAM 2071 (Equipment Class I) — Socket Outlet 2 pole 3 wire grounded

IRAM 2073 (Equipment Class I) — Plug 2 pole 3 wire grounded

IRAM 2086 (Equipment Class I) — Connector 2 pole 3 wire grounded

Usual rated currents in Argentina are 10 Amp for normal use (eg. household or commercial applications) and 20 Amp for higher loads (eg. air conditioners or industrial applications). Argentina plugs 10 Amp, which are used for applications of the Class I, are similar in appearance to the plugs in Australia or China, are however very different: the pins are longer, the body dimensions slightly different and most importantly, the wiring differs — the positions of phase (active) and neutral conductor are connected inversely.

Argentina Wiring Devices

The standards agency for Argentinian wiring devices is the "Instituto Argentino de Normalizaci�n y Certificaci�n" – IRAM

The standard plug for Argentina is defined by:

IRAM 2063 – Equipment Class II – 2 Pole, 2 Wire Non-Grounding (2POL)

IRAM 2073 – Equipment Class I – 2 Pole, 3 Wire Grounding (2P+E).

The Argentine 10 amp. plug, which is used in Class I applications in Argentina, is similar in appearance to the Australian or Chinese plug.

However, this plug differs greatly from the Australian plug
– the pins are longer,
– the body dimensions change slightly
– and most importantly, the wiring differs
the positions of the line and neutral contact pins are reversed.

For this reason, great care must be taken when manufacturing equipment for export to both Australia and Argentina, as well as specifying the correct plug, socket, cord or cordset for use with equipment.

The usual Argentine plug is a 3-wire grounded plug, rated at 10A, 250V AC.
